Barefoot Shoes, Meet Your Replacement - Barefoot Socks

Swiss has produced a line of barefoot socks that are cut resistant and as close to being actually barefoot as you can get. The material used is equivalent to bulletproof vests, but is pliable like cotton. Without the soles getting in the way, like some of the well-known barefoot shoes, these socks allow your natural barefoot movement while protecting your feet from pointy glass and sharp glass that might be on your trail. They are also excellent for water, capable of protecting your feet from coral and other sharp objects.

Unbreakable: Western States 100

Thousands of Americans participate in marathons every year. Completing a marathon is challenge that is worthy of bragging about to friends and family. Although, many people would agree that a marathon is longest distance that a human can run there is a sport in running that is almost unknown to the average American and that is the sport of ultra-marathon. An ultra-marathon is any distance that is over marathon distance of 26.2 miles. Typical races that runners who are participate in ultra-marathons are the 50K and 50 mile trail races. An even smaller percentage of runners participate 100 mile trail races. Some would say the people are participating in these 100 mile races and missing some brain cells, and even I agree.

The Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run is the Superbowl of ultra-marathon racing.  A runner must complete a 100 mile race in under 30 hours or a 50 mile race in under 11 hrs just to be put into a lottery to hopefully be picked to race. In 2010 four of the best ultra-marathoners (Geoff Roes, Anton Krupicka, Killian Jornet, and Hal Koerner) participated in the Western States 100.  Each of these runners typically run between 150 to 200 miles a week in preparation for the Western States.

To capture the competition between these four runners Journey Film created a documentary titled, Unbreakable: Western States 100 to display to viewers the intensity that the best of the best displayed at the June 2010 Western States race. Director JB Benna does a fantastic job at capturing the raw intensity that is displayed by the four best ultra-marathoners in the world. It was during the 2010 Western States that Geoff Roes won the race with a course record of 15 hours and 7 minutes, which is truly amazing.

The four runners highlighted in this film reach a place in themselves where they push themselves to their limits and is shown in unique way throughout the film. Here is a link to the trailer of the film and I am fairly confident that after viewing this four minute trailer you will be motivated to dust off your running shoes and go for a jog.

War Hero Following Through With Promise to Fallen Soldier to Play College Football

A 24 year old war hero named Daniel Rodriguez promised a fellow soldier that he would return to college to play division 1 football. His fallen friend was killed during a shootout in Afghanistan, in which Daniel was also injured. He received a bronze star for valor and a purple heart, for his heroic actions during combat. While he was stationed in Afghanistan, the soldiers "had nothin". He mentions that sometimes the soldiers would fill ammo cans and curl them for exercise. Back home, in the U.S. has been following his own workout routine (based on the one he did in Afghanistan), training, running routes, and drilling the books, to be able to get back into a division 1 college to live up to that promise he'd made. His workout is somewhat unconventional, involving lots of exercises that use his normal body weight. He also hired a production company to develop a highlight tape for him to send to colleges, in search of a scholarship.

A Triathlon AROUND THE GLOBE

An epic adventure enthusiast named Dan Martin is going to attempt a triathlon around the world. Yes, you read that correctly, AROUND THE WORLD. Dan is going to start his journey in New York by swimming across the Atlantic Ocean. Using a GPS device, he will swim 8 hour spurts, mark his location, get on a boat to rest, and jump back in at the same spot he stopped to continue his grueling swim. Once (if) he reaches France, Dan will bike across Europe, as well as Asia to the top right corner of Siberia. From there, he will trek through the snow and ice to the middle of Alaska, where he will start the running part of the journey. He'll run nearly half-way across Canada before crossing back into the United States and finishing back where he started in New York. If he finishes the triathlon, it will be the first time anyone has completed anything like it.

Finally, A Fiber Optic Cable That Carries Power and Data

Titus Appel (left) and Steve Sanderson, with their power-over-fiber communications cable Steve Sanderson and Sandia's Titus Appel have devised a new fiber optic cable that carries both electricity and data. The cable is still in the early stages of overall development, which means it is expensive as hell and it doesn't pack enough heat to power your computer or television, yet. But in situations where copper cable is not a valid power/data source, this cable is the bee's knees. An example of such a case would be for explosives, aviation, and medical devices, where a power surge, short, or lightning strike could spell disaster.

Another 4th Quarter Comeback By "The Other Manning"

Eli pulled out another close one in the 4th quarter. Just when I thought Tom Brady was going to blast off, Eli took control of the game late in the 4th, charged his team down the field, and scored, leaving less than a minute remaining for the Patriots. I can honestly say, I was very surprised by his top-notch performance. I didn't expect such a great game out of Eli, who is constantly overshadowed by his older brother, Payton.

The Latest Craze - Tazer Ball!

One of the coolest, dumbest things I've ever seen. Think about a cross between handball and indoor soccer with tazers.

Bill Belichick's Secret Weapon, Ernie Adams, "A Beautiful Mind"

Les Carpenter of Yahoo Sports published a very well written article about Bill Belichick's secretive assistant named Ernie Adams. Ernie has a beautiful football mind, and apparently doesn't forget anything about the sport that he has seen or learned. He is a mystery to everyone except Bill Belichick, with whom he keeps a very close rapport.

Our government dabbling in android software?

With the major push for e-government these days, especially at the federal level, it should come as no surprise that our government is pushing the use of a smart phone for transmission of highly classified messages.  This move, if approved, will allow government and military officials to communicate information of a very sensitive nature via text message.  I find this both exciting and very alarming.

It is fairly well-known in the tech industry that anytime secure software or interface is created that it is very likely that hackers have created a counterpart to these systems and it is probably even more effective!  What's more is that the attached article even eludes to the fact that our IT dept. chose to use the andriod market over apple because they could freely tinker with code.  Well let's think this through, if our guys can adjust code with little to no issue what do you think hackers can do??  Chances are that if the government finishes this project and it is hacked they will probably find text messages littered with LOL's and ttyl's and good ole LMAO's :) .

This 1600 horsepower diesel engine was originally assembled in 1962 by the Duvant company. It was originally used as a backup power source at the Auteuil Racecourse in Paris and ran up until 1990 when it was retired. The engine was then handed over to the Vintage Engines Appreciation Society, who unassembled the man-chine, transferred the parts, reassembled it, and got it running again in 2010. It is now set to display at the RĂ©tromobile 2012 show in Paris, running from February 1st to 5th.

Make The Best Out of Those Winter Blues

For many Kentucky outdoor fanatics, Winter months between December and March are times for side projects around the house, cleaning and re-cleaning gun(s) until they shine like a mirror, and organizing your tacklebox(es) while you itch for the Spring spawn. If this is you, you are missing out on some of the best parts of the outdoor season. Something I like to do is head out to my favorite hunting ground and walk the land, looking for any signs of deer or turkey. To be more specific, I'm looking for warn game trails, tree rubs, droppings, and grazing areas for my target game animals. Finding these signs will give you a better idea of how the animals are moving through the area, and how you can adjust for a better hunt next season.

Another important note is that deer and turkey will typically take the easiest route to get to their destination. By knowing this, Winter is the best time to set up barriers to push these animals to your more desired hunting areas. This past Fall, my father and I went out to do some tracking and noticed that a line of trees had been recently cut down for power lines, blocking the old game trail. The deer had diverged from this path, making a new one at an opening about 50 yards away. What we realized is, by clearing and setting up barriers, we can create a bottleneck to funnel deer and turkey right through our desired shooting window. Based on this adjustment, the chance of seeing a deer or turkey in these areas will be greatly increased.

Also, based on the funneled area, place your deer stand or blind accordingly. While bow hunting for whitetail, I prefer stands to blinds because they reduce the chances of your scent being picked up by down-wind deer. Scent-Loc is a good way to cover your human scent, but it is still not fool-proof. It can also be a safety concern to hunt on the ground, unprotected from big bucks in rut. There are a few stories every year about hunters being injured or killed by charging deer, I'd prefer not to become one of those stories. Regardless, take advantage of the hunting downtime to trim any branches back which might be blocking your viewing area (be careful not to cut away too many because it acts as cover and breaks up your silhouette along the tree line).

Finally, fishing in the winter time is one of my favorite things to do outdoors. I love suiting up in my camo coveralls, 2,000 gram thinsulate boots, alpaca wool socks, and insulated face-mask, and braving the cold (although it is important to recognize that hypothermia strikes swiftly and should be a definite precaution). There is not nearly as much boat traffic out on the water, which also means there is a lot less fishing pressure. This is a great time to find those hard to find honey-holes. Fishing in a couple of the more popular Kentucky water bodies, Lake Cumberland and Laurel River Lake, trolling is a way of life. In Laurel, this would most likely be for rainbow trout or smallmouth, while on Cumberland, the fish of choice is striped bass. Anyway, while trolling for these fish, mark some good structure areas on a map or gps. If you don't have much success trolling, come back and hit some of these spots with the lure of your choice (depending on the type and depth of the structure) and pull in some lethargic lunkers.

So when the cold weather has you down and you're feeling the winter blues, strap on some warm clothing, fill up a thermos, and get outdoors. Otherwise, you're going to miss the potential catch or hunt of your life.

15,000 Lumens LED Light Cannon

This 15,000 lumens light cannon is bright enough to 'illuminate a small planet'. Although this is an LED lit flashlight, it still puts out an excessive amount of heat, requiring its own cooling fan. If 15,000 lumens doesn't meet your power standards (in Tim Allen "Tool-time" voice), it's possible to attach multiple light cannons together to create your own miniature sun.

If you're thinking about creating your own bat signal using one of these baby's, unfortunately the light cannon is currently only available for special order. But in about 6 weeks, it will be on the market for a modest price tag of $2,500.

Self-Guided Bullet

Researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have built a prototype bullet that can guide itself to hit a target over a mile away. Unlike most bullets, this one is shot from a non-rifled gun, which is typically grooved to spin bullets out of the barrel. The self-guided bullet exits the barrel much like a dart would leave your hand. This release allows the bullet to calibrate it's adjustments must faster, at up to 30 times per second, which means that it actually is more accurate at longer distances.

The bullet is able to travel at speeds of up to 2400 fps, which isn't quite up to military standards yet. As noted in the article, these speeds were reached using off-the-shelf gunpowder. The research team believes that using a customized gunpowder will allow it to fly much faster.

Mt.Carmel Winter Ale Review

Being a guy who enjoys trying new types of beer (like most of us), I was enthusiastic to try Mt. Carmel Brewery's Winter Ale last weekend when it was presented to me. Mt. Carmel Brewing Company is a local brewing company that is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is always kinda cool to try a local beer in my opinion. My first initial thought as the beer hit my taste buds was how much of a spice it had and at the same time the spice I was experiencing was relieved by a cool caramel taste, making the beer become a tasty treat. Generally I am a lager beer fan, but the Mt. Carmel Winter Ale taste beat almost all of the lager beers I have tried in the past.

Mt. Carmel Winter Ale is defiantly a beer that would best be enjoyed during the colder nights of the year because of how thick of a beer it is, which surprised me. Also, with 8% ABV it packs quite the punch and is certain to warm oneself. Mt. Carmel Winter Ale is the perfect beer to go along side with a burger, steak, or any other manly meal.

Of the many beers I have tried over the years, this beer is defiantly on my top 10 list and the only ale I really truly enjoy. The rating I give Mt. Carmel Winter Ale is an 8 out of 10. Like I said, this beer is a local Cincinnati beer and can only be found in the Cincinnati area.

Below is a link to their website, so you all can check out their other beers:
